Preface

This book started as a conversation I kept having.

A colleague would ask how I wrote documentation so quickly. A friend would wonder how I could write on my laptop, my phone, and my tablet without anything getting lost or scrambled. A client would notice that my drafts arrived cleanly formatted whether I sent them as a Word document, a PDF, or a web page — and ask what software I was using.

The answer was always the same: plain text, written in Markdown.

Markdown is a lightweight way of writing that uses simple punctuation to mean things — bold, headings, lists. You write it in any text editor, on any device, on any operating system. No subscription. No proprietary format. No formatting that breaks when you open the file somewhere else. And when you need to publish, you convert it: to a Word document, a PDF, a web page, an ebook, or all four at once.

I wrote this book because the resources I found when I was learning Markdown were either aimed at programmers, too shallow to be practically useful, or concerned almost entirely with syntax rather than the workflows that make Markdown genuinely valuable. I wanted a book that treated Markdown as what it actually is for most people who use it: a practical writing tool, not a technical curiosity.
