Pie Chart

A pie chart divides a circle into slices to show how a whole is made up of parts. Each slice is proportional to its value. Pie charts are most effective when there are a small number of categories and the relative sizes are the main point of interest.

They are a natural fit for showing breakdowns: how reading time is split across genres, how a household budget is divided, how survey responses are distributed.

pie title My Reading List by Genre
    "Fiction" : 38
    "Non-Fiction" : 24
    "Biography" : 18
    "Science" : 12
    "Poetry" : 8

Keep the number of slices small — five or six is usually the practical maximum before the chart becomes hard to read. If you have many small categories, consider grouping them into an 'Other' slice.
